Cottage Living, Cottage Problems

With the summer upon us, many are flocking to local lakes to their summer abodes. The cottage brings with it timeless memories, beautiful sunsets and family togetherness.

These experiences often make occasional cottage drama an easy one to handle: the neighbour’s music is too loud, or the septic isn’t working properly – to name a few…

But how do you handle the BIG stuff?

  • Where IS that property line with the neighbour? Can they build their deck over what you’re certain is your property?

  • Are the kids fighting and competing for weekends at the cottage? Do you spend your time cleaning up after them the following weekend?

  • How do you decide what to do with the cottage when you’ve passed away?

Believe it or not, these are legal problems which can be solved!

Often times, all it takes is a trip to the lawyer’s office to understand your rights and implement a solution! Perhaps it means obtaining the survey for your property; implementing an agreement for the use of the cottage, and importantly, making some estate planning decisions.

Clarity about a situation can come from an expert – contacting your lawyer as soon as the problem arises can alleviate much difficulty. If you don’t have a lawyer, ask a friend or family member for a referral. Lawyers are trained and experienced problem solvers – contact yours today!
